Description
THE ROAD TO ARMAGEDDON
Peter Stiff

The Allied toe-hold on the Normandy beaches is precarious. If another Panzer division adds its might to the German 7th Army, a 100 000 British, American and Canadian soldiers will be thrown back in the sea. Hitler orders the mighty 2nd SS Panzer Division - Das Reich - to get there in three days. It must be delayed, but the only weapons left in the SHAEF arsenal, are the SAS, the Cooney teams, the SAS, the SOE, the Jedburgh teams and the Maquis.

Jedburgh Team Badger is formed from an unlikely trio. Major Cullum Forsythe, British Army, imperturbable and professional outwardly, but inwardly a turmoil of accusing ghosts; Lieutenant Jake Halder, US Army, impetuously trying to atone for the disgrace he brought to his war hero father, and, Lieutenant Armand Barres, Free French Forces, who is undecided if he is fighting for France or for the French people.

Jules Henrion's band of Maquis, woefully inexperienced but remarkably brave, throw themselves at the Das Reich with an unmatched ferocity which costs them dearly, but in the midst of this turmoil, Jake Halder and Jacqueline Henrion find love. SS General Heinz Lammerding and his staff officer, SS Captain Helmut Schmidt, fight back with savage contempt tinged by astonishment when the ragged bands commence attacks on their 20 000 combat hardened troops and their massive tanks. But, incredibly, the delays mount up as road bridges are destroyed, the railways cut and their fuel stocks blasted. They lash out in awful reprisal at Oradour-sur-Glane, as they had done before, many times, in Russia, and they raze it to the ground after murdering every man, woman and child.

This savage and no quarter running battle is still only a sideshow, obscured by the battle-smoke of the savagery of the Normandy landings. . . but the results at this sideshow, will determine who wins the war. . .
