In May 1890 a Pioneer Column of 1,000
men crossed the Shashi River to settle Mashonaland on behalf of the British
South Africa Company. In September they hoisted the Company Flag at Fort
Salisbury and so was birthed the land called Rhodesia.
500 of that column were members of the British South Africa Company
Police, hired to Police the new land. In later years the word Company
was dropped and the Force became known as The British South Africa Police,
or BSAP.
They became one of the world’s finest Police Forces and for the next
90 years were an integral part of the country and it’s people. Well respected,
honorable - a Force in the finest tradition.
In 1980, they ceased to exist when the country became Zimbabwe and were
succeeded by the Zimbabwe Republic Police who, regrettably, have let
the high standards set by the BSAP lapse.
