THE BARRIER

Ken Walker

Barrier

A novel of excitement and adventure which depicts with powerful authenticity the mining scene in Rhodesia today. In this his first novel, Ken Walker has managed to capture the humour, the drama, the pathos and ruggedness of mining life. His vivid characterisation and the totally credible situations are portrayed with a skill matched by few contemporary writers in Southern Africa.

The story tells of the conflict which develops between Alun Strong and his brother-in-law, Phillip Yerby, and how this conflict is eventually resolved. Yerby is the man of vision, the builder of a financial empire; Strong has that rare luck of stumbling upon potential fortunes, but needs to be motivated by his wife's ambition. It is a story of human relationships, sometimes touched by the sadness of the social barrier in Rhodesia. But it is not an unhappy book. Strong's friends Connie, Two-Boy and Dusty are delightful extroverts whose down-to-earth approach to life flavours the book with a rough humour.

The Barrier is that rare eventa novel of real people, of their lives, their loves and of fortunes made and lost-refreshingly different in today's grim world of pot, pollution and permissiveness.
