False Dawn

Hylda Richards

Much revealing light on the pioneer conditions in Rhodesia is shed by the diaries of Dan Judson and his wife Maynie, which form the basis of this book.

Judson is best remembered for his leadership in the Mazoe Patrol episode of the Mashona Rebellion in 1896. He played important roles also in the laager at Gwelo and with the Charter Patrol. He took part in the relief of Mafeking and was in charge of the Guard of Honor at Rhodes' funeral in the Matopos.

False Dawn - the period before the real development of Rhodesia began - analyses and describes the Mazoe Patrol, and reveals some little known facts. The value of the work lies in its richness and authenticity of its historical material.
