| This is a book for the layman. In this part of Central Africa it is still possible for the collection of wild flowers, in their rich diversity, to become an exciting adventure.
Indeed, it is still unusual to find people who can name even the most ordinary roadside flowers, yet well over 200 described and illustrated here have been collected along main roads and at popular holiday resorts where they may be readily recognised and enjoyed. It is hoped that the keys relating to outstanding characteristics will prove a useful guide to recognising flowers you come across.
The names of plants present a special problem. Latin names change as research continues, see page xv and are often unwieldy, such as Wormskioldia longepedunculata, recently changed to Tricliceras longepedunculatum. English names are sometimes unimaginative transplants from a vaguely similar European flower, such as pimpernel for this same plant. |
