TOBACCO
A Century of Gold 1890-1990

Trish Mbanga

Tobacco, A Century of Gold, is a tribute to the industry that has made great the country known today as Zimbabwe. A century ago there arrived in Central Africa a motley group of intrepid adventurers and loyal British police officers. Their subsequent efforts at taming the wilderness of the rolling sandveld resulted in the multi-million dollar tobacco industry which sustained Rhodesia through the vicissitudes of Federation, UDI and sanctions to Independence and the birth of Zimbabwe.

Flue-cured tobacco production takes place on a large scale and is both labour and capital intensive. .It has become the lynch-pin of large scale agricultural production and is Zimbabwe's single largest earner of foreign currency. Tobacco is an integral part of the entire economy, contributing as it does nearly 10 per cent of the nation's gross output and producing more than 7 per cent of Gross Domestic Product.

This book records the main areas of development of the industry. In addition, it gives the reader an insight into the way of life.of those who tended the leaf of gold through the decades. For above all, the tobacco industry is a personal thing, and its fortunes have been shaped by men and women of great spirit and vision.
