THE WHITE IMPALA

Norman Carr

white impala

What turns a man from an elephant poacher, intent on killing and proud of his marksmanship, into a conservationist who has transformed vast stretches of the Rhodesian bush into two of the most successful game reserves in Africa?

Norman Carr has written one of the outstanding animal stories of our time. In that book, Return to the Wild, he described how he reared two male lion cubs found orphaned in the Kafue National Park and, when they were mature, returned them to the bush. Apart from the story of his lions the book was remarkable for its observations of wild life; similar sidelights on animal behavior make The White Impala most delightful reading. This time elephants dominate the picture. Once his quarry, they became the subject of some of his most rewarding studies, and in the final pages he describes the experiments that are now going on in Africa to regulate their place in the balance of nature. Some unusual lions make their appearance, with such other curiosities as the uniquely colored impala which provides his title, 'nsulu', the bird which by its commotion deliberately leads man to the combs of wild honey it has discovered, and those members of the human race who favor a diet of wild caterpillars.

Above all it is the interdependence of men, animals and their habitat which is the theme of The White Impala: it is not only autobiographical, but prophetic.
