Zimbabwe is a large, landlocked and lovely country that lies between the Limpopo and Zambezi rivers in south-central Africa - a diverse and for the most part strikingly beautiful land whose great, sunlit spaces beckon the traveller and the lover of wildlife. About a quarter of the region is occupied by the Highveld, a broad ridge that rises 1 500 metres (4 921 feet) above sea level and runs the length of the country, from the dry Kalahari sandveld of the southwest to the lush, lofty and scenically stunning mountains of Nyanga, Bvumba and Chimanimani in the Eastern Highlands. To the southeast is the Lowveld, a parched, sun-blasted plain mercifully cut through by two major rivers that sustain vast plantations of sugarcane and the wild animals of the rugged Gonarezhou National Park. At the opposite end of the country, in the far west, lies Hwange, rated among the world's most splendid wildlife sanctuaries, and the grand cataracts of the Victoria Falls which, wrote the celebrated 19th-century missionaryexplorer David Livingstone, 'must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight'. From here, the waters of the river make their way eastwards, into the great lake of Kariba and through the middle Zambezi Valley, one of Africa's last true wilderness areas. Other parts of the regional spectrum embrace the mystic majesty of the ancient citadel known as Great Zimbabwe, the haunting grandeur of the Matobo Hills, and the charmingly embowered cities of Harare and Bulawayo.
