RHODESIAN HISTORY:
A LOOK AT JANUARY OVER THE YEARS
January - the first month of a New Year and always full of hope for a new day in Rhodesia. In 1978, 1979 and 1980 it was politics that dominated the news - each time about the steps being taken to implement a political settlement that would eventually bring peace to the country.
January 1978. The year started off with the Vumba Hotel being attacked, but attention was soon focused on the Political Arena as talks stated about the eventual transition to Majority Rule. But life continued in all areas as Rhodesia went forward. People were married, Dynamos were the dominant soccer team. |

January 1979. A mixed bag of news from around the world. Iran was in the headlines (and 30 years later they are still the same type from there - nothing changes much!). Call up for Africans came into effect. |

The way was eventually cleared for the first one-man one-vote elections to to be held. What a way to end the month. |
January 1980 What a difference a year makes. The first black Prime Minister, Bishop Muzorewa has been elected and now a settlement has been reached with Great Britain. It is Ceasefire, Elections and the return of Nkomo and Mugabe that are the headlines. The Great Race has started to see who will be first Prime Minister of newly Independent Zimbabwe. Who would pull the biggest crowd? The final days of Rhodesia are at hand and British Airways fly into Salisbury again! |
